In a few short weeks I’m teaching a class at Craft Napa called UFO Puzzle Collage. The idea behind the class is to take all the projects that you lost interest in, decided were ugly, misplaced (of course none of us have ever lost a project in our studios, have we??) or just generally wanted to bury in the backyard and put them to work.
It’s all about reinvention. And not letting items that we’ve spent so much time on go to waste.
I’m also going to teach how to make one of these fellows:
It’s a collage in book form. Art Brain and I have been stewing over this type of book for a while. The idea came to me when I started the studio reboot (which still is not complete by the way) and quickly filled up a plastic tub with samples and step outs from magazine articles and books and exhibits and…well. You get the idea.
Assembling them all into a book makes me feel like I’m giving them some respect and I dig that idea. I’m not done adding to this book but here is where I’m at with it right now.
I’ll just keep adding and adding and adding. I also want to start one that is much larger, this one is fairly small. These are my kind of project, never really complete. Since it seems like the only time I leave my artwork alone is if someone buys it or it’s on exhibit, this type of 3D collage makes me super happy.
If you’re joining me for class at Craft Napa (still a couple of spots left in this one, my other is full), I look forward to seeing you! And if you were debating what class you’d like to take – take a look at your stash of UFOs and if the idea of cutting those buggers up thrills you, give my class a consider!
